Hydrostatic Head (HH) & Waterproof Canvas Bell Tents
How Waterproof Are Bell Tent Sussex Canvas Tents?
At Bell Tent Sussex, we build our bell tents using premium treated cotton canvas, available in 285gsm and 360gsm Fire-Retardant (FR) options. While many customers ask about Hydrostatic Head (HH), it's important to understand that canvas tents perform very differently from synthetic polyester tents.
Unlike polyester fabrics, cotton canvas becomes more waterproof when exposed to rain. The natural cotton fibres expand as they absorb moisture, tightening the weave and creating a highly effective waterproof barrier while still allowing the tent to breathe. This is one of the reasons why canvas bell tents have remained the preferred choice for glamping, camping and commercial use for generations.
What Is Hydrostatic Head?
Hydrostatic Head (HH) is a laboratory test used to measure how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before water begins to pass through it.
During testing, a fabric sample is secured beneath a clear vertical tube, which is gradually filled with water. The height of the water column, measured in millimetres, determines the Hydrostatic Head rating.
For example:
- 1,000mm HH – Suitable for light rain.
- 2,000mm HH – Designed to withstand prolonged rainfall and stronger winds.
- 5,000mm+ HH – Typically used for heavy-duty waterproof applications such as groundsheets.
The higher the number, the greater the resistance to water pressure.
Why Canvas Is Different
Hydrostatic Head testing was originally developed for synthetic waterproof fabrics such as polyester and nylon.
Cotton canvas behaves differently. Rather than relying solely on a waterproof coating, treated canvas combines water-repellent treatments with the natural swelling of cotton fibres. As rain falls on the tent, the weave tightens, helping to prevent water penetration while maintaining excellent breathability.
This natural process significantly reduces condensation inside the tent compared to many synthetic alternatives, creating a more comfortable environment in all seasons.
Because of these unique characteristics, Hydrostatic Head figures are not always the best way to compare the waterproof performance of canvas tents.

With correct pitching and initial weathering, our premium canvas tents provide excellent waterproof protection while remaining breathable and comfortable throughout the year.
Why Choose Canvas Over Polyester?
Compared with standard synthetic tents, canvas offers several important advantages:
- Better breathability
- Reduced condensation
- Cooler during hot weather
- Warmer in colder temperatures
- Longer lifespan
- Greater durability
- Superior comfort for extended stays
- Timeless natural appearance
These qualities are why canvas remains the preferred material for premium bell tents and luxury glamping accommodation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are canvas bell tents waterproof?
Yes. Our treated cotton canvas is specifically designed to provide excellent waterproof protection. As the canvas becomes wet, the fibres naturally tighten, improving water resistance while remaining breathable.
What Hydrostatic Head is your canvas?
Because cotton canvas is not directly comparable with synthetic fabrics, Hydrostatic Head ratings are not the most accurate way to assess its waterproof performance. Instead, we focus on premium treated cotton canvas, proven construction methods and real-world weather performance.
Is the 360gsm canvas better?
The 360gsm Fire-Retardant canvas is our most robust fabric, offering increased durability and additional fire-retardant properties, making it ideal for commercial sites, glamping businesses, events and customers wanting maximum longevity.
Are your groundsheets waterproof?
Yes. Every Bell Tent Sussex bell tent includes a heavy-duty 540gsm zipped PVC groundsheet, providing exceptional waterproof protection against moisture from the ground.

How Do We Collect The Plastic?
We have all grown up to love and respect where we live. The beach is a huge part of our lives which is why we need to protect it as much as we can.
Over the years Bell Tent Sussex have been collecting 1kg of plastic waste for every Bell Tent we sell, all from the Sussex coast. This will then be used to create energy from our local clean, waste to energy centre preventing it from going to landfill. The energy created will be in the form of electricity and hot water. The electricity will be sent the national grid whilst the hot water will be used for network heating.
Bell Tent Sussex have a few ideas how we can gain interest to actively go out and help keep our beaches clean and safe, whilst having the backing our clean tech company to deal with all the plastic waste in a clean environmentally safe way.
What We Do Now
We joined Greenspark to ensure that Bell Tent Sussex has a positive impact on our planet and its people. Check out our impact so far. For every sale we will collect 10 plastic bottles from the beaches.
