How Bell Tent Sussex Is Fighting Plastic Pollution on the Sussex Coast

At Bell Tent Sussex, the outdoors is not just where our products live, it is where our values live too. We have grown up around the Sussex coast. We camp on it, swim in it, and build our entire business around the idea that the natural environment is worth celebrating. Which is exactly why protecting it is not optional for us.

This is the story of what we are doing about it and the numbers that show it is working.

1kg of Plastic for Every Bell Tent Sold

For every bell tent we sell, Bell Tent Sussex collects 1kg of plastic waste directly from the Sussex coast. Not a donation to a distant charity, not a carbon credit purchased online, actual plastic, physically collected from the beaches that our customers camp on, surf on, and wild swim in.

That plastic does not go to landfill. It goes to our local clean, waste to energy centre where it is processed in an environmentally responsible way. The energy created comes back in two forms. The electricity generated is sent directly to the national grid. The hot water produced is used for network heating in the local community. Every bell tent sold creates a chain of environmental benefits that starts on a Sussex beach and ends in clean energy for local homes.

Our Greenspark Partnership — The Numbers

In January 2024, Bell Tent Sussex joined Greenspark, a certified environmental impact platform that tracks, verifies, and publicly reports every action taken. Since joining, the numbers speak clearly.

30 months earth positive. Bell Tent Sussex has maintained a net positive environmental impact for 30 consecutive months.

36 trees planted through the EarthLungs Reforestation Project, focused on mangrove restoration, one of the most effective forms of carbon capture available. Those 36 trees represent 144 square metres of forest area and an estimated 0.331 tonnes of CO2 sequestered per year.

269,130 plastic bottles recovered from coastal environments through our partnership with Plastic Bank, a programme that simultaneously removes ocean-bound plastic and provides meaningful income to vulnerable coastal communities who collect it.

To put that plastic recovery figure into perspective:

The plastic recovered is equivalent to 1.346 million disposable coffee cups worth of plastic saved from landfill. It is equivalent to 518 bathtubs full of plastic bottles removed from the sea. It is equivalent to 10.765 million plastic straws taken out of the waste stream.

These are not projections or estimates. Every figure is verified and publicly reported through Greenspark's public ledger, updated quarterly with full evidence of every action funded. You can view Bell Tent Sussex's full impact record at public.getgreenspark.com.

Why This Matters to Us

The Sussex coastline is not a backdrop to what we do. It is the reason we do it. Our sauna tent was designed with Sussex beach sessions in mind. Our bell tents have been pitched on coastal fields, clifftop glamping sites, and beachside campsites across East and West Sussex for over a decade. The health of that coastline is directly connected to the experience our customers come to us for.

Plastic pollution on UK beaches is a real and visible problem. Anyone who walks a Sussex beach regularly particularly after a busy summer weekend or following a storm knows this firsthand. The debris that washes up, the fragments that accumulate in the strand line, the waste left behind by visitors degrades the same environments that make outdoor life in Sussex so special.

The 1kg of plastic collected per bell tent sold is our direct response to that. It is not a grand gesture. It is a practical, measurable commitment that compounds over time. Every sale contributes. Every collection makes the beach a little cleaner. Every kilogram that goes to the waste to the energy centre is a kilogram that does not end up in the sea.

What Comes Next

Bell Tent Sussex has plans to go further. We are developing ways to actively involve our customers and the wider Sussex community in coastal clean up activity giving people a direct, hands-on way to contribute to the same mission that drives us. Watch our video gallery for updates on clean up events, impact milestones, and how you can get involved.

If you want to join the mission, start here. Every bell tent purchased contributes directly to plastic recovery on the Sussex coast and tree planting through verified environmental projects. Every purchase is part of something bigger than the tent itself.
